Final Idea/Exhibition
When we were thinking about how to present the brain we had many ideas to make it appeal to the audience. One of the idea was to add the effect of tea stains like ataraxiaemorte. However, we decided against the idea since the brain was already forming its shape. Plus the fact that we used card to draw the brain which would make it difficult for the shades of brown from the tea stain to appear more visibly. We really wanted the texture to appear on the card but was unsuccessful and got rid of the idea.
The idea was to just develop from the 'Repsonses of the Brain' exhibtion and add the 'Surrealist and Realist' Exhibtion together. However, this lead use to rethink our idea since the idea did not blend with one another.
The idea about the surrealist piece in the exhibition is that it links very well to the frontal lobe of the brain. They both can be manipulated to have a different response, so we thought we use this idea for the observational video about behaviour/personality and movement. since, that is the easily manipulated.
Surrealism
- 20th century avant-garde movements in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by irrational juxtaposition of images.
- The implication of this means that the term surrealist can change the way the way the audience interpret a piece.
The word ‘manipulate’ is also what the frontal lobe of the brain does as the section of the brain (more specially the frontal cortex) can manipulate information and maintenance/updates information.

This is perfect when looking at the behaviour, personality and movement)
Orginal idea
- As the Frontal lobe is responsible for problem solving, reasoning, judgement, the questions posed to the participant will be – Which film…Challenged you to think differently? Did you engage emotionally with? Was more rational?
- As the Temporal lobe is responsible for memory, hearing, understanding language, the questions posed to the participant will be – Which film…Recalled a distant memory? Incorporated sound that engaged you? Had a clear narrative progression?
- As the Occipital lobe is responsible for vision and colour perception, the questions posed to the participant will be – Which film… Stimulated you visually?
We decided last minute to make not use all three sections. Since we did not want to create confusion when the audience saw the exhibition. Therefore, this question "Which film… Stimulated you visually?" was removed from the exhibition and split the brain into two sections; Frontal Lobe and Temporal Lobe.
The two films we decide to use for the exibition are Blackmail by director Alfred Hitchcock for realism film and Un Chien Andalou by director Luis Bunuel for surrealism film. The reason we chose these films are due to the fact that there are from the same year 1929 and share similar themes such as voilence and repressed sexuality, dysfunctional relationships. We tought having films that share a common factor would not force a response that we want but they would think for themselves.
